Cruse Dog Park Details
What is a Dog Park?
A Dog Park is an enclosed, safe space for friendly canines to play. The first
Dog Parks were built on the west coast.
Who is developing this park?
The Springfield-Greene County Park Board, along with the
Citizens Dog Park Committee. The Park Board is providing the land, valued at $80,000, plus utility
costs for the project, estimated at $20,000. The Dog Park Committee is charged with raising funds for
fencing and other amenities. The first phase of the project, in order to actually open the facility, needs funding of $150,000. The Dog Park project received a $75,000.00 donation from the Cruse Trust in the summer of 2005 and a $60,000.00 additional donation from the same Trust in the summer of 2006.
Where will the park be located?
The Cruse Dog Park will be developed at what was formerly
called Loren Street Park, west of Kansas Expressway between Grand and Catalpa Streets.
When will the Dog Park open? With the additional donation from the Cruse Trust, it is possible
that construction will begin in 2007 with opening of the park later that year, The exact schedule is
currently being created.
Why should I take my dog to a Dog Park?
Dog Parks are a great place to socialize your dog. This helps your dog to be a better neighbor. A Dog Park offers larger areas for dogs to play that most back yards allow, providing a much larger place for your dog to run off-leash in a safe environment.
How do I know if my dog is a good candidate for the Dog Park?
Obedience classes and the Canine Good Citizen test are great ways to make sure your dog is ready for play! It is critical your dog can get along with other dogs. Also, dogs in heat should not be taken to the Dog Park.
Can I bring my kids?
It may not be appropriate for dogs and small children to mix in a large open area. Dogs may not react well to small children. A minimum age will most likely be required to enter the Dog Park.
Will the Dog Park be supervised?
The Dog Park will operate on a self-policing honor system. Owners will be responsible for their own dog(s) and must be with their dog at all times. Plans include utilizing volunteers and staff to monitor the Dog Park during heavy use times.
How can I get involved?
Join the Dog Park Committee and volunteer with one or more of its many projects! You can also make a donation to the project, fully tax-deductible. Current projects include:
- DOG SWIM - September
- DOG FEST - September
