In 1994 a licensed veterinarian Dr. M. Burns was very frustrated with the behavior of one of her cats named "Munchkin". "Munchkin" would only drink water from a dripping faucet and would lay around on the kitchen counters all day waiting for her human to turn the faucet on. Aside from finding cat hair in the food preparation areas on the counters, Dr. Burns was getting very tired of running to the faucets to satisfy "Munchkin's" demand for running water. Add to this a nasty water bill, because someone would forget to turn the darn faucets back off, and well, you get the picture! But what is a responsible pet owner to do? As a veterinarian, Dr. Burns was well aware of the importance of sufficient water intake in cats to maintain healthy kidney and urinary tract function. Lack of enough water intake will make a cat's urine more concentrated than normal and leads to an environment where bladder crystal formation becomes more likely. This can lead to urinary tract obstruction and the infamous and potentially fatal Feline Urinary Syndrome. Therefore, denying "Munchkin" her running water was just not an option.

Then, eureka! Dr. Burns decided "Munchkin" would have running water and maintain good hydration, but not at the kitchen sink. This running water would magically appear directly in "Munchkin's" bowl! From this first home prototype, the Drinkwell® Pet Fountain was born.

Since the first prototype several years ago, the Drinkwell® Pet Fountain has been a big hit with cat owners across the country. It turns out tens of thousands of cats exhibit the same behavior and just as many cat owners are frustrated with trying to satisfy their cat's demand for running water in kitchens or bathrooms. When you consider the important health benefits also provided by the Drinkwell® Pet Fountain, it should come as no surprise that this problem solving product: was selected as the recipient of Cat Fancy's Best New Cat Product award has literally sold itself by satisfying a critical pet need In fact, the success of the product and impressive growth of sales through the years led to the redesign of the Drinkwell® Pet Fountain, which resulted in the addition of several new features, including increased water capacity, an adjustable flow rate and an optional reservoirs which increase the water capacity and automatically keeps the Drinkwell® Pet Fountain filled for several days.
